Low-maintenance dogs for beginners
No dog is truly low-maintenance, but some ask for less brushing, less exercise and less expertise than others. These are the breeds in our data that make daily life simplest for a first-time owner — with one honest caveat about vet bills.
- Every breed here scores low for grooming, moderate or low for exercise needs, and high for first-time suitability.
- We ranked them by coat care first, then by exercise. Only five breeds in our data meet all three conditions.

Low effort isn't the same as low cost
A Whippet or Greyhound needs a quick brush, a couple of good walks and a soft bed — they're among the simplest dogs to live with, and among the cheapest, at roughly €1,000–1,900 a year in our data.
The French Bulldog, Pug and Boston Terrier are easy day to day, but their flat faces bring breathing, eye and skin problems that can cost far more than grooming ever would. Choose health-tested parents and budget for good insurance; in our data they run €1,200–2,600 a year.
Please don't choose from this list if…
- You have small pets at home and you're drawn to the sighthounds — many will chase anything that runs.
- Your summers are hot and you can't keep a flat-faced dog cool.
- You're hoping for a dog that needs almost none of your time; every dog needs company.
Questions people ask us
What is the most low-maintenance dog breed?
In our data the Whippet and Greyhound are the easiest all-rounders: short coats, calm indoors, modest costs. Low-maintenance still means daily walks and company.
Are French Bulldogs good for first-time owners?
Their temperament often is — affectionate, adaptable and easy to live with. Their health is the hard part, so choose carefully and plan for vet costs.
Which dogs hardly need grooming?
Short-coated breeds like the Whippet, Greyhound, Boston Terrier and Pug need little more than a weekly brush. Nails, teeth and ears still need looking after.
