Train Your Dog

Training you can actually do yourself.

Short sessions, clear steps, and pictures that show you exactly what to do. Kind, reward-based training that fits into an ordinary day.

Five to ten minutes a day is plenty. Really.

Age matters

What to work on, and when.

A puppy, a teenager and an older dog need quite different things from you. Here's roughly what each stage is about.

  • Puppyhood

Everything is new, and most of what you do now is simply showing your puppy that the world is a friendly place.

    • Confidence
    • Meeting the world gently
    • Learning to talk to each other
    • House training
    • Being handled
    • Sleep and calm
  • The teenage months

Things that worked last month may stop working for a while. It passes. Consistency and patience carry you through.

    • Waiting and self-control
    • Working around distractions
    • Recall, again and again
    • Walking nicely
    • Staying consistent
  • The grown-up years

Now it's about making good habits reliable, and keeping life interesting.

    • Reliability
    • Everyday manners
    • New skills for fun
    • Enrichment
  • The older years

Older dogs still love to learn. Keep it short, gentle and kind to stiff joints.

    • Gentle brain games
    • Clear communication
    • Activities that suit their body
    • Keeping familiar skills alive

Your journey

Everything you've worked on, in one place. Mark what's going well, what needs more practice, and look back on how far you've come.

Honest about what training can do

These lessons work for most dogs, most of the time. Dogs are individuals, and some days simply go badly. That's normal.

If your dog is frightened, in pain, or showing aggression, please speak to your vet and a qualified behaviourist. Some things shouldn't be worked through alone.
