Come when called
Help your dog learn that coming back to you is always worth it.
You'll need: A few small, soft treats, A quiet room or garden, A little patience.
How to do it
- Step 01
Start close
Sit or crouch a couple of steps away from your dog. Say their name, then "come" in a bright, happy voice. That's it — no repeating, no stern tone.
- Step 02
Welcome them in
The moment your dog turns towards you, smile and open your arms. Keep the encouragement going the whole way in, so coming back feels like the good part.
- Step 03
Reward straight away
As your dog reaches you, give the treat and a bit of fuss. Reward while they're right next to you, not as they wander off again.
- Step 04
Stop while it's still fun
Five or six goes is plenty. Short sessions usually work better than asking for too much at once. Finish, have a play, and leave them wanting more.
Building it up
Move on when the step before feels easy. If it wobbles, go back one — that isn't failing, it's just how learning goes.
