Saying hello without jumping — a dog and their person practising together

How to do it

  1. Step 01

    Set it up calmly

Ask your visitor to come in slowly and ignore your dog at first. No high voices, no leaning over.

  2. Step 02

    Reward four paws down

Every second your dog keeps all four paws on the floor, quietly drop a treat down by their feet.

  3. Step 03

    Hello happens low

When your dog is settled, your visitor can crouch and say hello gently. If the jumping starts, they simply stand up again.

  4. Step 04

    Practise little and often

Two minutes at the door a few times a week does more than one long session.
